Graduation is a major milestone, and what you wear on this special day should strike a balance between formality, comfort and personal style.

Since this is a significant event marking the completion of years of hard work, it’s important to dress appropriately while also feeling confident and at ease.

As with any day-time event, there is a lot to consider when thinking of your graduation look. Is it an outside or inside ceremony? Will it be warm? Will you be spending lots of time on your feet? How long will you spend in your gown? Are you going out to celebrate afterwards?

Most graduations have a formal dress code, so it's important to choose an outfit that is appropriate but still reflects your personal style. Universities provide a cap and gown that must be worn during the ceremony. These gowns are typically black with a specific colour trim. The cap is usually worn flat on the head with a tassel on one side. Because the gown will cover most of your outfit, it’s a good idea to wear something neat and comfortable underneath.

"light breathable fabrics are ideal under heavy gowns."

A dress or dressy jumpsuit will take you from graduation to celebration. As most graduations happen over the summer months, light breathable fabrics are ideal under heavy gowns. As well as plain, geometric or floral prints are a perfect nod to the season and can be adapted to wear again after the event.

You'll likely be sitting for long periods of time and walking across stages or uneven surfaces like grass or stairs. Practical footwear is essential. Heels are fine as long as they’re stable; but a good wedge or low block heels will give you all-day comfort. Flats or stylish sandals are also great alternatives.

Accessories should be kept minimal. Graduation is a formal event, so understated jewellery and a watch are normally enough. Be mindful of your cap, it may interfere with elaborate hairstyles, big earrings, or large headbands. Opt for a neat hairstyle that allows your cap to fit securely. There'll be lots of photos, so keep a hairband or jaw in your bag to use when you eventually take your cap off.

"Wear something that honours the occasion and makes you feel proud"

If you are attending as a proud parent, the dress code is generally “smart casual”. As most graduations happen over the summer months, a printed summer dress or jumpsuit is perfect.

Ultimately, graduation is a celebration of achievement. Wear something that honours the occasion and makes you feel proud. Whether you're walking across the stage or cheering from the audience, your outfit should reflect the significance of the day.
